Where does Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) fit into your recycling program?  LCA is a data-driven way to model the environmental and social impacts of materials and products for their whole "life cycle"; from extraction of raw materials through manufacturing, distribution, product use, and their final fate such as recycling, landfilling, and incineration.  LCA is being used in carbon footprinting, packaging decisions and green building assessments. LCA has also received increased attention from retailers including Walmart, who are starting to use LCA to better understand, and to promote innovation in, their supply chains.

The more LCA is being used, the greater the need for those of us interested in sustainability to understand it: what are its strengths, its weaknesses, its blind spots, and where it is headed in the future.
