The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality’s State Environmental
Laboratory Services Division is seeking applicants for a fall laboratory
safety internship starting in October. The internship will be funded
through the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL).
Details of this internship include:
- *Location*: The internship will be in person, working for the State
Environmental Laboratory at 707 N. Robinson Ave. OKC, OK 73102
- *Dates*: The Fall season application deadline is June 14, 2024. The
first possible start date will be October 1, 2024
- *Application Process:* Interested parties will need to apply for the
internship at

Once approved, APHL will match applicants with mentors.
- *Pay*: Each selected site will be eligible for the award amount of up
to $12,800 dollars for one intern for 16 weeks, or any other period at a
rate of $20 per hour paid to the intern
*Description of Internship Duties:*
This internship project will be to assist the State Environmental
Laboratory’s Environmental Health and Safety Officer (EHSO) with their
responsibilities and duties. The objective is to aid the EHSO in their
day-to-day work while developing the intern's knowledge and understanding
of environmental health and safety in a laboratory setting. The intern will
assist with and learn about: incident reporting and root cause analysis,
risk assessments for laboratory processes and procedures, hazard
identification and control implementation, safety training development,
safety inspections, Safety Data Sheet retrieval and review, safety
equipment inventory, inspections, and cleaning, continuity of operations
and emergency response planning, Chemical Hygiene Plan and Lab Safety
Manual development and review, categorizing laboratory waste, and
development of safety related Standard Operating Procedures and Work
Instruction Documents. The intern's assistance will help accomplish safety
projects and goals such as: renewed Job Hazard Analyses on all laboratory
methods, holistic emergency and contingency plans for laboratory
operations, and new safety document development.
The State Environmental Laboratory is the Principal State Laboratory for
the State of Oklahoma, and areas of the lab include General Chemistry (Wet
Chemistry), Elemental Analysis (Metals Analysis and Radiation Chemistry),
Environmental Microbiology, Gas Chromatography, Gas Chromatography - Mass
Spectrometry, and Sample Management. The intern will work directly with the
EHSO and have their own workspace and computer among career scientists in a
collaborative, inclusive and inspiring culture within an Agency that
strives to protect environmental and public health.
