Murray J. Fox Scholarship Fund Memorializes Bill Heenan with Scholarships
To memorialize the late Bill Heenan, the Campus Council is coordinating with the Murray J. Fox Scholarship fund to recognize the academic achievements of students interested in the recycling field. The trust fund has allocated an additional $15,000 to be awarded amongst meritorious students from an affiliated state.
The Murry J. Fox Scholarship Fund was created in 1994, when Murry Fox, a long-time supporter and member of the National Recycling Coalition, started a fund to provide scholarships to college students in environmental studies interested in recycling. This year, in addition to cash scholarships, recipients will also receive complementary admission to the Resource Recycling Conference: September 16-17, 2014 in New Orleans (an excellent networking opportunity), as well as a one-year membership to the Coalition.

Over the years we have seen a tremendous amount of time, money and energy go into the development and deployment of LEED(r) (Leadership in Engineering and Environmental Design) throughout the US and overseas. With over 2 billion square feet of new space designed and constructed utilizing these standards, LEED(r) continues to grow in popularity.
During the downturn in the economy from 2008 to 2010 the number of LEED(r) projects grew by 50% while non-LEED(r) construction fell. In addition the number of retrofit projects increased during this same time frame and even surpassed the number of new construction projects.
So what does this mean for "GREEN" building in the future? As a consultant, I have worked with clients all over the country. The one thing I am constantly asked these days is; "How relevant is LEED(r) today?" A quick snapshot of the USGBC(r) project list would make anyone realize that LEED(r) certification is growing off the charts. However when you ask some of your local builders, haulers or recyclers in certain areas of the country, you will hear a different story.

Investment Forum: Austin Recycling Innovations
Deadline for Applications Extended to April 24!
Plan now to join the Texas Entrepreneur Network, in partnership with the City of Austin, for the Recycling Innovations Investment Forum to be held May 29, 1 - 5 p.m. at Austin City Hall, 301 W. 2nd St. The forum will bring recycling manufacturing companies together with Austin's investment community for an afternoon of funding pitches.
As a Zero Waste community, Austin is aggressively pulling recyclable materials from the waste stream and seeking companies to start-up, expand and relocate in Austin to use these raw materials in value-added processes. Companies seeking opportunities to present information before Austin investors can submit applications for consideration. Ten companies will be chosen to make 10-minute pitch presentations before an investor audience. Another ten companies may have an opportunity to make 1-minute pitches in a lightning round.
Companies eligible for consideration include local, regional, national and international companies engaged in recycling, upcycling and reuse manufacturing. Early stage and growth stage companies with proven technology and scalable business models interested in Austin/Travis County locations are encouraged to submit proposals. Start-ups must demonstrate market acceptance, and waste-to-energy projects are ineligible.
