Why Reducing Waste is a No Brainer for Higher Ed

July 19, 2011 at 1:00 PM EDT

As higher education institutions compete to attract students, faculty and funding during these economically fragile times, it's important that they take every opportunity to differentiate their school and their students in order to prepare and arm them to make an impact for their employers, for themselves and for the planet. The leading colleges and universities are leveraging sustainability practices to attract students, faculty, grants, endowment funding and contributions from alumni.

Join John Davies, VP, Senior Analyst at GreenBiz Group, in conversation with Paul Pistono, Vice President, Public Sector Solutions of Waste Management; David DeHart, Associate Director, Environmental Services of Rutgers; and Carrie Kashar, Assistant Director, Office of Sustainability of Florida International University. We will discuss how Waste Management has partnered with these and other schools to institutionalize environmentally sustainable practices into their operations. From dining halls to dorms to athletic facilities; from administrative staff and teaching staff to students and alumni; from move-in day to move-out day to homecoming to graduation-learn about creating a comprehensive roadmap for handling every material and every resource a school produces or consumes.

In this hour-long webcast, we will discuss:

 * The importance of viewing the waste stream as a "materials stream" and how to maximize the value (and diversion rates) while minimizing costs
 * That mapping a path to zero solid waste is possible by institutionalizing and consolidating end-to-end materials handling processes
 * Best practices for handling the consumables (materials and resources) at universities
 * The importance of student engagement and the development of green teams to accelerate your program
 * How data tracking and transparency aid in both student engagement and sustaining your program
